Where can I put my web pages?Your internet provider will usually provide a place to put your web pages. Contact your provider for details. Soon, I will be posting details for using the most common internet providers... If you live in the Bloomington area, you can put your pages on the IU system. To activate an IU account, you will need to be on campus. I can help you with this. Just send me email. An alternative method is to post your web pages using a free service. The most popular are Geocities and Tripod. If you decide to use one of these sites, see the instructions below... For each web site you create (and each directory in this site), you can make a file called index.html. This file will automatically be displayed if the URL does not contain a filename. For example, when you type http://www.coolsite.com/ the page you actually see is http://www.coolsite.com/index.html Ok, I found a place, now how do I put them there????Most web servers will let you use FTP to transfer your files. I don't have an FTP tutorial yet, so you will need to do a little searching on your computer and your ISP's website for more information.... Using GeocitiesCreate a Geocities/Yahoo! account. If you already have a Yahoo! account, you can simply use this account, or create a new one. Ignore the PageWizards and PageBuilder, since they don't allow you to edit the HTML directly. You want to use the "Upload / FTP" selection under "Advanced Toolbox". This will allow you to transfer files from your computer to the Geocities computers. Once this is done, you can view the pages! For example, if my Geocities name is ryan1234, and I transfer a files called firstPage.html, then the URL of this page would be http://www.geocities.com/ryan1234/firstPage.html Using TripodTripod is a bit more complex than Geocities, so all I will say is this: you should use the FileManager. Why would you want to use Tripod instead of Geocities? The main reason is that a Tripod account offers you more space, so you can store a larger amount of pictures, videos, etc. Of course, you could sign up for multiple Geocities accounts... It also appears that Tripod allows you to use more advanced web design techniques, such as CGI scripts, but this is beyond the scope of A106. |
