Lesson 6

Please read all of the Lesson 6 pages thoroughly. I know it's the last lesson, and you're in a hurry to finish, but you can loose many, many points from silly mistakes on this lesson. In particular, make sure you use newsgroups for the newsgroups assignments. Web discussion groups do not count. Also, make sure you send the URL of your completed web page. I cannot give you the points for putting the page online if I cannot find the page!

What is the point of newsgroups?

How do I use newsgroups?

Much more detailed information is available on creating web pages.

Webhunt

For the final question, the answer does not include the words "and hidden frauds explore". These words come from a strange translation that has the lines numbered incorrectly.

What is the difference between an Internet Portal and an Internet Service Provider?

An Internet Service Provider is a way to get onto the net, and an Internet Portal is a place to go when you are on.

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that allows people to connect to the internet. We often compare the internet to the interstate highway system. In this case, ISPs would be the exit ramps. Any time you want to use the internet, your home computer must connect to the ISP, and all communication goes through their computers. There are many ISPs that only serve a local area (BlueMarble and Kiva are the most popular providers in Bloomington), but a few ISPs serve the entire US. These include America On Line, Earthlink, and AT&T.

An Internet Portal (portal) is a web site that provides "everything you need" on the net. Most portals are search engines, but they may also provide chat rooms, email accounts, web hosting services, calendar systems, etc. The most popular portals are Yahoo, AltaVista, and Excite. Many ISPs have their own portals, which they encourage their customers to use.

Pitfalls to Avoid

Don't forget to send the URL for your web page. I cannot give credit for putting the page online if I have no idea where to find the page...

Don't list websites for the newsgroup assignment. If the name you are putting down has "www" or "http" in it, this is a website, and will not be given credit.
